How long does it take to learn guitar? An honest timeline
Weeks, not years, for your first song. Here is what to expect at 15, 30 and 60 minutes a day, based on the hours each skill really takes.
“How long until I’m good?” is the first question almost everyone asks. The honest answer: it depends on how many hours you put in, far more than on talent. So instead of guessing, we added up the practice time for every skill in our curriculum.
The timeline
This table shows roughly when you reach each milestone, practising most days of the week:
| Milestone | 15 min a day | 30 min a day | 60 min a day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play your first song End of Stage 1 | 3 months | 6 weeks | 3 weeks |
| Improvise your first solo End of Stage 3 | 10 months | 5 months | 3 months |
| Play lead with bends and vibrato End of Stage 6 | 2 years | 11 months | 6 months |
| Solo over changing chords End of Stage 7 | 2.5 years | 14 months | 7 months |
A few things stand out. Your first song comes quickly, in a few weeks. The jump from strumming chords to playing solos takes a few months. And the advanced material (playing over jazz chord changes, for example) is a year or more away for most people. That’s normal, and the journey there is the fun part.
What speeds it up
- Daily beats weekly. Twenty minutes every day beats two hours on Sunday. Your hands learn between sessions, while you sleep.
- Slow and clean. Playing slowly and correctly builds skill faster than playing fast and sloppily.
- A clear next step. Most people stall because they don’t know what to practise. A sequence of small, checkable skills fixes that.
- Playing real music early. Songs keep you motivated. Exercises alone don’t.
What slows it down
- Gaps of several days, especially in the first month when fingertips are still toughening up.
- Skipping rhythm. People who can’t keep time struggle to play with anyone.
- Learning random things from videos with no order.
