Free online guitar tuner
Tune to standard tuning, E A D G B E. Use your microphone and watch the needle, or tap a string to hear its note and match it by ear.
Tap a string to hear its note on repeat, then turn that string's tuning peg until the two sound like one note with no wobble. Or use your microphone and watch the needle.
How to tune your guitar
- Pluck one open string (no fingers on the frets).
- Tap the same string above, or watch the needle if you’re using the microphone.
- Turn that string’s tuning peg slowly. Tighter makes the note higher, looser makes it lower.
- Always finish by tuning up to the note. If you go too high, drop below and come back up; the string holds its pitch better.
- Repeat for all six strings, then check them all once more.
Standard tuning

| 6 | E (low) | Thickest |
| 5 | A | |

Tuning questions
Why does my guitar keep going out of tune?
New strings stretch for the first few days, and temperature and humidity changes move the pitch. Tune every time you pick the guitar up.
The microphone option doesn’t work. What now?
Your browser may be blocking the microphone, or your device may not have one. Use the reference tones: tap a string above and turn the peg until the two notes stop “wobbling” against each other.
Can I tune by ear?
Yes. The 5th fret of each string matches the next open string, except the G string, where you use the 4th fret to match the B. The tuner above is the easiest way to learn what “in tune” sounds like.
