How to practise guitar in 20 minutes a day
A simple session plan that covers technique, a new skill, review and real music, without wasting a minute.
Twenty minutes is plenty if you use it well. The trick is to split it into short blocks so you touch every part of playing, every day.
| Block | Minutes | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Warm-up | 3 | Finger exercise with a metronome |
| New skill | 8 | The one thing you’re learning this week |
| Review | 3 | Something you learned last week |
| Ear | 2 | One short ear-training game |
| Play | 4 | A song or a backing track, just for fun |
Use a metronome
A metronome is the most honest teacher you’ll ever have. Start slower than you think, get it clean three times, then add 4 BPM. There’s a full-page version in our free online metronome.
Finish on music
Always end with something musical: a song, a jam, a riff. It’s what makes you pick the guitar up again tomorrow.
Keep a streak, not a schedule
Missing a day is fine. Missing four days in a row is where progress leaks away. Even five minutes keeps the streak going and your fingertips tough.
