How long does it take to learn guitar?
With 30 minutes of practice a day, most people play their first full song in about 6 weeks, play comfortably as a beginner (songs, riffs, a simple solo) in about 5 months, and reach intermediate in about 11 months. Halve the daily time and it takes about twice as long; what matters is the total hours and practicing most days.

Hours are the practice time planned for each stage of the Fretwork curriculum, added up. Months assume you practice every day; miss a day a week and add about 15%.
What speeds it up
- Practicing most days. Five 20-minute sessions beat one 100-minute session: fingertips toughen and chord shapes stick between sessions.
- A clear next step. Most lost time comes from not knowing what to practice. Work on one skill until you can pass a simple check, then move on.
- Songs you like. You will practice more if the goal is a song you actually want to play.
- Slow, clean repetition. Practicing a chord change slowly and cleanly is faster in the end than practicing it fast and sloppily.
What slows it down
- Skipping chord changes and going straight to songs, then stopping at every change.
- A guitar that is hard to play: strings too high off the neck or too heavy. A setup at a guitar shop fixes this.
- Long breaks. After two weeks off, the first few sessions go into getting back to where you were.
Questions
Can I learn guitar in 3 months?
In 3 months at 30 minutes a day (about 45 hours) you can play several songs with open chords and a strumming pattern. Barre chords and lead guitar usually take longer.
How many hours does it take to get good at guitar?
Around 78 hours makes you a comfortable beginner and about 170 hours an intermediate player who can solo with bends and vibrato. Players keep improving for years after that.
Is it too late to learn guitar as an adult?
No. Adults often progress quickly because they practice more deliberately. See learning guitar as an adult.
