Printable Guitar Transposing Chart

Transposing means moving a whole song to a new key, usually to suit your voice or to use easier chords. With this chart, find each chord's root in the left column, move across by the number of half steps you want, and read off the new chord. The chord type (m, 7, maj7) never changes.

Questions

How do I transpose guitar chords?

Decide how many half steps to move (one fret = one half step). Move every chord root by that amount and keep the chord type. G, C, D moved up two half steps becomes A, D, E.

Should I transpose or use a capo?

Use a capo to go up while keeping easy shapes. Transpose when you need to go down, or when the capo would end up too high.
